What The New Coldplay Album Will Sound Like

Coldplay’s Upcoming Release and What We Expect

Coldplay is one of my favorite bands because of their original sound, catchy tunes, and pretty melodies. The band successfully manages to recreate itself with every new release. With the first album, Parachutes, the sound was dominated by acoustic guitars and a mellow sound. Most of the songs were slow and moody. Only a few songs, such as Yellow and Everything’s Not Lost could be considered to have an ambient sound. This style was greatly developed on their next album, A Rush of Blood To The Head. Nearly everything sounded ambient and much deeper. The band had a fuller texture and more developed sound. The bass was much more prominent and keyboards were also overpowering the old acoustic guitar sound. The vocals also sounded more full and layered.

With the release of X&Y, the band developed the ambient sound even more. Now, using strings, electric keyboards, effects, and a great deal more instrumentation. The songs sound more dynamic and even epic than they used to. Comparatively, Parachutes sounds like it was recorded in a dingy room. The new album (probably released within the next year) is what I expect to be the best yet from this band. A July news posting on Coldplay’s official website says they are recording in Barcelona, and this record is influenced by Spanish music and culture. The band has traveled to South America and has been recording in the process.

Therefore, I expect the new album to have a greater focus on rhythm and bass. Particularly, I imagine that the songs will have a bit of Spanish and Latin rhythmic influence. Also, the stereotypical Spanish guitar sound is unlike the kind Coldplay has developed. I am also eager to hear this transition in guitar playing, because Spanish guitar has a gorgeous sound. The website claims they are traveling light and jamming in churches. Perhaps this might also be in some ways a return to their roots and core small group sound. I can’t say for certain what I expect the vocals and melodies to sound like, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to hear many more voices on this album and a lot more harmonization. That seems to be the trend lately. I think this was a great choice for the band to tour foreign countries and derive musical inspiration from other cultures.
