Decemberists Underestimated
The Crane Wife Deserves More Recognition
I’m still surprised this band isn’t more popular. After releasing 3 albums on an indie label, The Decemberists released The Crane Wife with the help of Capitol records. Still, they aren’t being played on any radio, tv, or mainstream channels. That’s a shame because their music is truly unique, versatile, and catchy. The record is based loosely on Japanese folk tale called “The Crane Wife.” The music has been suited very well to the lyrics and the concept album as a whole is great to listen to. My favorite songs are The Island, and Summersong.
The style which this band exhibits on this album is, like I said, quite dynamic and versatile. I’ve traced roots back to many bands which I love. On the band’s official website, it says this album has been influenced by Pink Floyd, Yes, Fairport Convention, and R.E.M. While all those are on point, I also hear a bit of Oasis, Thursday, Queens of The Stone Age, and Death Cab For Cutie. If you’re looking for a fresh new record that sounds like great rock music ought to, you need to get this album.
